Staff Profile
Alan Forrest
Clinical Denture Technician
Alan is a registered Clinical Dental Technician (CDT). A CDT is a dental technician who has extended their training to achieve a new qualification. This allows a CDT to be part of the dental team as a health care provider, working directly with the patient to provide dentures.
If a patient requires partial dentures they must first be examined by the dentist to ensure that all their natural teeth are healthy and any work that is needed prior to the dentures being constructed is attended to by one of the other health care professionals.
Alan is one of the very first in the country and the only one at present in the North East to be registered with the General Dental Council (GDC) and jointly recognised by the Royal College of Surgeons.
When Alan provides dentures for a patient, he assesses their facial features, how they smile, how they talk and their naturally relaxed position. He can then construct their dentures with these features in mind. In contrast, when a denture is sent to the laboratory, the technician working on these is unlikely to have all this information.
Alan started his apprenticeship as a dental technician at Newcastle Dental Hospital in September 1976, qualifying in 1979, obtaining an Advanced Certificate in 1982 and now having a recognised qualification in Clinical Dental Technology. He now has 32 years of experience and a commitment to continual professional development. Alan is able to provide patients at Guidepost Dental Practice with a personal, professional service that is linked with the Dentists, Hygienists and implantologists.
