Dental Crowns

Dental crowns can easily take you from dark, broken down and stained teeth like the image on the left, to a natural smile like the image on the right.

Crowns are used to strengthen damaged, cracked or broken down teeth. Crowns are commonly known as caps (because a crown sits over your existing tooth, covering the entire surface).
Crowns can also be used to improve the aesthetics of your teeth but they require a lot more preparation than veneers, but are stronger as the whole tooth surface is covered. Crowns can be made from an array of materials either full gold, metal, porcelain or a combination of both. We would discuss which would be the best option for you during your consultation.
Step by step guide
Crowns are made and fitted over two appointments
The first visit is where we would prepare your tooth; we reshape it so the crown can be placed on top. Once the tooth is prepared, an impression taken of your teeth is taken. This impression is then sent to a dental laboratory, where the impression of the prepared tooth is used to help make your new crown. It usually takes around two weeks for a laboratory to custom-make your new crown, but in the mean time we fit you with a temporary crown to cover and protect your prepared tooth.
On your second visit we would remove your temporary crown and sit the new crown over your tooth to see if it fits and is the right colour and shape. If you’re happy with the crown and the way it looks, we will then cement the crown into place.
